Hormones

Estradiol (E2)

The main female sex hormone, oestradiol, is made mainly in the maturing egg cells in the ovaries, the follicles, according to the NVKC. According to the NVKC, together with progesterone oestradiol develops and matures the lining of the womb in every cycle, so that a fertilised egg can implant. With early failure of the ovaries and in women during and after menopause, oestradiol can be low according to the NVKC, and in pregnancy or with hormone treatment for IVF it can be raised. Only a blood test shows the level of oestradiol. For women older than 14, Unilabs uses 70 to 950 pmol/l in the follicular phase, 140 to 2400 pmol/l mid-cycle and 80 to 1150 pmol/l in the luteal phase.

Hormones

Progesterone

According to the NVKC, progesterone is a hormone that readies the womb lining after ovulation for the implantation of a possible fertilised egg. Later in pregnancy, according to the NVKC, it is mainly the placenta that makes progesterone. If progesterone rises insufficiently in early pregnancy, that can be an extra indication of an ectopic pregnancy or an early miscarriage, according to the NVKC. Only a blood test shows whether progesterone rises enough in early pregnancy. For the luteal phase, Certe gives 13.1 to 46.3 nmol/l in its notes and Unilabs 3.8 to 50.6 nmol/l.

Thyroid

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone)

Your TSH value tells you how hard your pituitary is pulling on your thyroid, and in women what counts as normal depends heavily on life stage. TSH is thyroid-stimulating hormone: a messenger that the pituitary, a gland under the brain, sends to the thyroid to say how much thyroid hormone to make. With a high TSH the thyroid is usually running slow, and a low TSH fits an overactive one. Outside pregnancy the usual range at the laboratory that runs the test runs from 0.27 to 4.20 mE/L; in the first trimester the pregnancy hormone hCG pushes the value down and lower limits apply, which is physiology and not an abnormality. Around conception, pregnancy and the months after birth this number deserves extra attention, and you discuss an abnormal result with your midwife or doctor.

Vitamins

Vitamin D (25-OH)

Your vitamin D level says how much vitamin D your body has in store, and in the Netherlands that store depends almost entirely on the UVB your skin caught last summer. Two groups come out low unusually often: women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, and women who cover their skin or have darker skin. So the month of the blood draw belongs with the result, and any advice about supplementing runs through your midwife or GP.

Minerals

Ferritin

Your ferritin value tells you how large your iron store is, because ferritin is the protein that stores iron, and in every menstruating life stage that store is under pressure. Iron is lost with every cycle, and with heavy menstrual bleeding the loss exceeds what diet can replace. Heavy bleeding is the most common cause of iron deficiency in women under fifty. In pregnancy the requirement rises sharply and ferritin falls physiologically in the second and third trimesters, and after the menopause the monthly loss disappears and your store shifts towards the male level. One reference figure therefore cannot fit all of those stages at once.

Hormones

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

In the ovaries of women after puberty, anti-Müllerian hormone, AMH for short, is important for the growth and maturation of the egg sacs, in which eggs mature, according to the NVKC. The support cells of those sacs make the hormone, which is why the AMH value shows how large the follicle supply is. In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) AMH is strongly raised, and over the years, after surgery on an endometriosis cyst or, in women of reproductive age, after chemotherapy for breast cancer it can fall. Only a blood test shows the value. Diagnostiek voor U uses its own limit per year of age for women, for example 0.63 to 4.54 µg/l at 35 and 0.24 to 2.83 µg/l at 40. A high AMH does not establish PCOS on its own.

Hormones

FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) drives egg maturation and is a key indicator of ovarian reserve and menopausal status. Rising levels may signal your body is working harder to stimulate ovulation. Your healthcare provider can help you understand what FSH means for your fertility and cycle.

Thyroid

Free T4 (Thyroxine)

Free T4 is the main thyroid hormone and may significantly influence women's menstrual regularity, fertility, and pregnancy health. Some healthcare providers emphasise the importance of optimal T4 levels for women planning conception or experiencing cycle irregularities.

Minerals

Iron (Serum)

Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. According to the NVKC, most of the iron in the body sits in the haemoglobin of the red blood cells. During their period, according to the NVKC, women can lose so much blood that iron deficiency develops, and that can lead to anaemia. How much iron is in the blood only a blood test measures. The unit for serum iron is micromoles per litre (µmol/l). Star-SHL uses 7 to 35 µmol/l for women aged 19 to 50, and 8 to 30 µmol/l for women aged 51 to 65.

Vitamins

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 is considered essential for red blood cell formation and neurological health in women. Hormonal changes, pregnancy, and certain contraceptives may influence B12 needs. Consult your healthcare provider for personalised assessment.

Do I need a referral for a blood test in Venlo?

No, with Lunarahealth you don't need a referral from your doctor. You can order a blood test online and choose a location in Venlo.

Can I walk in without an appointment in Venlo?

No. The 5 locations in Venlo work by appointment only, so walking in without one is not possible here. You order your blood test online first and then arrange the appointment for the location you picked.

Do I need to book an appointment for a blood draw in Venlo?

Yes. Blood draws in Venlo are by appointment. Order your blood test online first; you then receive the appointment details for your chosen location, so you know in advance what time you are due.

Do I need to fast before my blood test?

It depends on the test. Each test says whether fasting is needed, and after ordering the instructions for your tests are in your confirmation email and on your order page. Drinking water is always allowed.

What do I need to bring to the blood draw location in Venlo?

Two things: the barcode we email you and a valid form of ID. You can show the barcode on your phone, so printing is not necessary. Without a BSN the email has no barcode, and you print the referral form through the link in that email. Nothing else is needed. The barcode tells the location in Venlo which tests were ordered.

How far in advance should I plan my visit in Venlo?

Allow one working day between your order and your visit in Venlo. The email with your referral arrives within one working day, and you cannot be seen without it. Orders placed outside office hours count from the next working day. The blood draw itself takes about fifteen minutes.

What are the opening hours of the blood draw locations in Venlo?

Opening hours vary per location. Most locations in Venlo are open on weekday mornings; some also in the afternoon or on Saturdays. Check the current opening hours per location above.

Which laboratory performs the blood draw in Venlo?

Blood draws in Venlo are handled by VieCuri. Each draw site operates independently and is certified; you order your blood test online and choose your location at checkout.

What does a blood test cost in Venlo?

With Lunarahealth a blood test in Venlo starts from €60,-, including the draw and a doctor's review of your results. You pay yourself and need no referral; a GP-ordered test is usually covered by your health insurance instead.

How quickly will I get my blood test results?

Your results are usually in your online account within 2 working days of the blood draw, often the next day. Some markers take longer. You are notified as soon as your results are available.

Are the phlebotomy points in Venlo owned by Lunarahealth?

No, all phlebotomy points are operated by independent, certified laboratories. We partner with them to facilitate blood draws. Have questions? Please contact us directly, not the laboratory.

What is the best time to get blood drawn in Venlo?

4 of the 5 draw sites in Venlo only open in the morning; the draw site that stays open longest closes at 17:00. For a fasting test, the morning is therefore the practical choice: you get up, get your blood drawn, and eat breakfast afterwards.

How does getting blood drawn work in Venlo?

You order your blood test online and receive your barcode by e-mail within one working day. You then take it to a draw site in Venlo for the draw itself, which takes about fifteen minutes. Once the lab is done, your results, with a doctor's assessment, appear in your account.

Can I get a private hormone or blood test in Venlo?

Yes. With Lunarahealth you order online, no referral needed, from €60,-, and pick a draw site in Venlo that fits your cycle or your schedule. A BIG-registered doctor reviews every result.

Can I get a blood test at a pharmacy in Venlo?

No. Blood for hormone and other panels is drawn at laboratory collection points in the Netherlands, never at a pharmacy. In Venlo you pick one of 5 sites run by our partner laboratories, order online, and bring the referral you get by email along with valid ID.

How do I prepare for a blood test in Venlo?

Bring your barcode, or your printed referral form if you have no BSN, and valid ID. Some hormone tests are timed to your cycle or need fasting: the product page tells you which, and a fasting test means nothing to eat after midnight and water only until your draw. Otherwise, eat and drink normally.

All phlebotomy points are operated by independent, certified laboratories. We partner with them to provide you with a reliable blood draw experience. These locations are not owned by Lunarahealth.

Have questions about your order, results, or the blood draw process? Please contact us directly, not the laboratory. We are happy to help.
