Liver Function

The liver performs hundreds of functions including filtering blood, producing bile, metabolizing nutrients, and breaking down toxins. Liver conditions often develop without noticeable symptoms in the early stages. A liver function test measures markers that can reflect how the liver is performing.

This test may be relevant for women who:

• Want to check liver health as part of a general assessment
• Take medications that may affect the liver
• Have risk factors for liver conditions
• Experience symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal discomfort, or changes in digestion

This test includes the Liver Function Test (LFT) panel, which typically includes markers such as ALT, AST, ALP, GGT, bilirubin, and albumin. These markers together reflect different aspects of liver function, including cell damage, bile flow, and protein production.

Elevated ALT or AST may suggest liver cell stress or damage. Elevated ALP or GGT may be associated with bile duct or liver issues. Bilirubin reflects how the liver processes the breakdown of red blood cells. Albumin indicates the liver's ability to produce proteins. Together, these markers may help identify whether the liver warrants further attention.

Each marker is shown with your value and the reference range. Mild elevations in a single marker may not be cause for concern, as values can fluctuate temporarily due to factors such as exercise or medication. Patterns across multiple markers are typically more informative. Results should be interpreted by a healthcare provider in context.

Fasting is recommended. It is advisable to avoid alcohol for 48 hours before the test, as alcohol can temporarily affect liver enzyme levels.
