B Vitamins
B12, Folate, B1, and B6: key B vitamins.
Intrinsic Factor Antibodies tests for autoimmune-related B12 malabsorption. Women may be at higher risk for autoimmune conditions, and this test could help explain persistent B12 deficiency that does not respond to dietary changes or oral supplementation.
Doctor's Assessment Included
Reference ranges may vary between laboratories. When you order a test, a BIG-registered doctor assesses your personal results in context. For treatment decisions, discuss your results with your GP.
Check your own valueThis test detects antibodies directed against intrinsic factor, a protein produced by stomach cells that is essential for vitamin B12 absorption in the small intestine. A positive result may suggest an autoimmune mechanism is interfering with B12 uptake.
Autoimmune conditions are generally more common in women. If pernicious anaemia is identified, treatment can be tailored accordingly. This is particularly relevant for women experiencing fatigue, hormonal imbalances, or neurological symptoms alongside low B12.
Testing may be recommended when you have persistently low B12 levels despite supplementation, if pernicious anaemia is suspected, or if you have other autoimmune conditions. Your healthcare provider can determine whether this test is appropriate for your situation.
If intrinsic factor antibodies are detected, your healthcare provider may recommend B12 injections rather than oral supplements, as absorption through the gut may be impaired. Regular monitoring and follow-up with your provider is important for managing this condition.
