LDH (Lactate Dehydrogenase)

When cells break down, LDH enters the bloodstream. Red blood cells contain a great deal of it. That makes the value especially informative in anaemia. A normal range sits around 120 to 250 U/L in most laboratories. In women, raised results usually come from two things. A vitamin B12 or folate deficiency, or the collection tube itself.
LDL Cholesterol
Your LDL cholesterol is the amount of cholesterol carried in LDL particles, the ones that can lodge in the artery wall. In women that number moves with the hormonal life stage, which is the main reason a single result without context says very little. Around the final menstrual period, LDL and apolipoprotein B rise measurably, independently of ageing. During pregnancy the value rises so far, and so normally, that a lipid panel cannot be interpreted at all. And an unexpectedly low LDL in women points more often to an overactive thyroid than to anything wrong with the cholesterol itself. This page explains what your value means at each life stage.
LDL/HDL Ratio
The LDL/HDL ratio is your LDL cholesterol divided by your HDL cholesterol, and anything under 3.0 counts as acceptable. For women that threshold is far softer than it looks. Oestrogen keeps HDL naturally higher, which makes the denominator larger, so the result stays low even when your LDL is already high. Around menopause the picture reverses: LDL climbs while HDL slips, so numerator and denominator move against you at the same moment and the ratio rises faster than either value on its own. Never read this number apart from your LDL, and do not compare it with a man's.
