A Hepatitis C Antibody (anti-HCV) test detects antibodies produced by the immune system in response to the hepatitis C virus. A positive result indicates exposure to the virus but does not distinguish between a current or past infection. Further testing is needed for confirmation.
This test detects antibodies against the hepatitis C virus in your blood. Anti-HCV antibodies typically develop within a few weeks to months after exposure and remain present even after the infection has resolved. The test provides a qualitative result and serves as an initial screening tool.
Hepatitis C is a viral infection that can cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and liver cancer if left untreated. Many people with hepatitis C are unaware of their infection because symptoms may not appear for years. Early detection through antibody screening enables timely referral for confirmatory testing and, if needed, effective antiviral treatment.
Testing may be recommended for individuals with risk factors such as prior blood transfusions, intravenous drug use, or occupational needle-stick exposure. It is also commonly included in routine health screenings. Consult a healthcare professional for guidance on whether this test is appropriate for you.
Non-reactive result indicates no Hepatitis C exposure. Continue safe practices.
Reactive result requires confirmation with HCV RNA testing. Modern treatments can cure Hepatitis C - consult with a hepatologist.
Support liver health by avoiding excessive alcohol consumption, maintaining a balanced diet, and staying physically active. If you are at risk for hepatitis C, avoid sharing needles or personal hygiene items. Consult a healthcare professional for advice on screening and prevention.
