A plant-based diet can do your body a lot of good, but with a vegetarian or vegan eating pattern, some nutrients simply ask for a little more attention. If you are wondering whether you are getting enough of them, a vitamin deficiency test can offer more clarity.
This panel measures six values that may be relevant when you eat plant-based: your iron stores, vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc, magnesium and your blood count. That way you trade doubt for insight into where your body stands right now.
Why this test?
Eating fewer or no animal products brings plenty of good things. At the same time, some nutrients, such as vitamin B12, are naturally found mostly in animal products, and your body often absorbs iron from plant sources a little less easily.
A vitamin deficiency blood test can show how these values are doing for you. Not to question your way of eating, but to help you keep it up with confidence.
Who is this test for?
This test can be interesting if you eat vegetarian, vegan or largely plant-based. For example if you recently made the switch and are curious how your body is responding, or if you have been eating this way for years and would like a check-in.
If you menstruate, your iron stores may deserve extra attention, especially in combination with a plant-based diet. And if you notice complaints such as tiredness, this panel can give you a factual starting point for a conversation with your GP.
What is tested?
This panel measures six values in your blood:
- Ferritin: reflects your iron stores. A low value can fit with a supply that has slowly become smaller.
- Magnesium: a mineral involved in, among other things, your muscles, nerves and energy metabolism.
- Vitamin B12: naturally found mostly in animal products, playing a role in your nervous system and the production of red blood cells.
- Vitamin D (25-OH): plays a role in your bones, among other things, is partly made through sunlight and is found in only a few plant-based foods.
- Complete Blood Count (CBC): looks at your red and white blood cells and your hemoglobin, which can add context to a lower iron or B12 value, for example.
- Zinc: a trace element that plays a role in your immune system, skin and hair, among other things. It is included in this panel, so you do not need to arrange a separate zinc test.
What can this test tell you?
Your results show for each value whether it falls within the reference range. This can give insight into your iron stores, your vitamin B12 and vitamin D status, and your zinc and magnesium levels.
Good to know: a single measurement is a snapshot, not a diagnosis. A value outside the range does not automatically mean something is wrong, but it can be a reason to look into it further together with your GP.
How is the sample collected?
This test requires a small blood draw at a certified lab. You can choose from 700+ sample locations across the Netherlands, so there is almost always a location near you.
After ordering, you schedule a moment that suits you. The draw itself usually takes just a few minutes, and you do not need a referral from your GP.
When is this test useful?
A blood test for vegetarians and vegans can be valuable at different moments, for example:
- when you have recently switched to a (largely) plant-based diet and want to see how your values develop
- when you have been eating vegetarian or vegan for a long time and would like a check-in
- when you notice complaints such as tiredness, tingling or getting ill more often, which can sometimes be linked to a deficiency
- when you hope to become pregnant and are curious about your nutritional status
What do the results mean?
Each value comes with a reference range and a short explanation. What counts as usual can differ per laboratory.
A lower ferritin value can fit with smaller iron stores, for example, and a lower B12 is seen somewhat more often with a plant-based eating pattern. What a result means for you depends on your personal situation. The reviewing doctor helps you place your values in the right context.
What happens after the results?
Your results are usually available online within a few working days. Each value is shown clearly with its reference range and an understandable explanation, so you know what you are looking at.
If you want to talk further about your values afterwards, these results give you a concrete starting point. Every blood test result includes a professional assessment from a BIG-registered doctor. For treatment decisions, discuss your results with your GP.
Frequently Asked Questions
This panel measures ferritin (your iron stores), vitamin B12, vitamin D, zinc and magnesium, complemented by a complete blood count. These are nutrients that may need extra attention with a plant-based diet.
Yes. The nutrients in this panel are especially relevant with a fully plant-based diet, because vitamin B12 is naturally found mostly in animal products.
Usually not. Fasting is generally not required for the values in this panel. The instructions you receive after ordering will tell you if anything specific applies to your draw.
No, you can order this test online yourself without a referral from your GP. You choose a sample location near you and plan a moment that suits you.

What We Test
This test includes 6 biomarkers to give you a comprehensive health picture.
| No. | Biomarker | Unit | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01 | Magnesium Magnesium is an essential mineral involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions in the body, including energy production, muscle and nerve function, blood sugar regulation, and bone development. | mmol/l | 5 days |
| 02 | Vitamin B12 Vitamin B12 is considered essential for red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency may develop gradually and is sometimes associated with dietary patterns. Healthcare providers can help interpret your results. | pmol/l | 3 days |
| 03 | Vitamin D (25-OH) Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin. Its main job is the absorption of calcium and phosphate from the gut. That makes it decisive for bone metabolism. The skin produces it under the influence of sunlight. Food and supplements supply a smaller share. | nmol/l | 3 days |
| 04 | Ferritin Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, so your ferritin level shows how large your iron reserve is. Serum iron only measures how much iron is circulating in your blood at that moment; ferritin describes the reserve behind it. That reserve empties before your haemoglobin falls, so a low ferritin can already cause symptoms while your blood count still looks normal. Ferritin also rises with inflammation, infection and liver strain, which is why it can only be read properly alongside a CRP. Commonly used reference values are 30 to 400 µg/l for men and 15 to 150 µg/l for women, but your own laboratory report is what counts. | ug/l | 2 days |
| 05 | Zinc Zinc is an essential trace mineral involved in immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis, protein production, and cell division. It is required for the activity of over 300 enzymes. | umol/l | 6 days |
| 06 | Basic Blood Count A basic blood count measures three core values in your blood: hemoglobin, white blood cells and platelets. Together they say something about oxygen transport, immune defence and clotting. It is a simple baseline check, without the red-cell indices and white-cell differential of a complete blood count. | — | 2 days |
| Your result arrives once the slowest test is finished: 6 days. This is indicative; turnaround varies per laboratory. | |||
Preparation
-
Been ill? Wait a little
RequiredHad a fever, an infection or a vaccination in the past 2 weeks? Wait with the draw until you are fully recovered. These values react to inflammation and would give a distorted picture.
-
Preferably fasting
RecommendedComing fasting gives a slightly cleaner value, but it is not required. If it suits you, eat nothing from 22:00 the evening before and drink only water.
- Water is always fine. Drink as usual beforehand, it makes the draw easier.
- Take your usual medication, unless your own doctor told you otherwise.
