4 markersAn iron panel that measures markers related to iron storage and transport. Iron status is commonly relevant for menstruating women, as monthly blood loss can affect iron levels over time.
Why this test?
Iron is involved in oxygen transport, energy production, and immune function. Women who menstruate are more likely to experience reduced iron levels due to monthly blood loss. Symptoms of low iron can be subtle and develop gradually, making blood testing a useful way to check iron status before symptoms become pronounced.
Who is this test for?
This test may be relevant for women who:
- Experience fatigue, lightheadedness, or reduced exercise tolerance
- Have heavy menstrual periods
- Follow a diet that may be lower in iron (vegetarian or vegan)
- Want to check their iron stores as part of a general health assessment
What is tested?
This panel measures four iron-related markers:
- Ferritin: reflects the body's iron stores; low ferritin is often one of the earliest signs of iron depletion
- Iron (Serum): the amount of iron circulating in the blood
- Transferrin: a protein that transports iron; levels may rise when iron stores are low
- Transferrin Saturation: the percentage of transferrin that is carrying iron; provides context about how effectively iron is being transported
What can this test tell you?
Together, these markers provide a picture of iron status. Low ferritin may suggest depleted iron stores, even if serum iron appears within the reference range. Elevated transferrin with low saturation can indicate the body is trying to compensate for low iron availability. These patterns may be discussed with a healthcare provider to determine whether further evaluation or dietary adjustments may be appropriate.
How is the sample collected?
The test requires a blood draw at a certified sample point (afnamepunt). There are over 750 locations across the Netherlands. After placing your order, you can select a convenient location and schedule your visit.
When is this test useful?
This test may be considered when:
- You experience persistent tiredness or low energy
- You have heavy menstrual periods and want to monitor iron levels
- You follow a plant-based diet and want to check iron stores
- You are curious about whether iron status may be contributing to how you feel
What do the results mean?
Each marker is shown with your value and the reference range. Low ferritin is often the first indicator of depleted stores. Low serum iron combined with high transferrin and low saturation may suggest iron deficiency. Normal or high ferritin alongside low iron can sometimes be seen during inflammation, which a healthcare provider can help interpret. Results are intended to be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Preparation
Fasting is recommended for the most accurate results. If you take iron supplements, it is advisable to avoid them for 24 hours before the blood draw. The test can be done at any point in your menstrual cycle.
What happens after the results?
Your results are typically available within a few working days. Each marker is shown with your value, the reference range, and an explanation. These results can serve as a starting point for a conversation with your healthcare provider about iron status and any appropriate next steps.

What We Test
This test includes 4 biomarkers to give you a comprehensive health picture.
Serum iron measures the amount of circulating iron in your blood. Iron is essential for haemoglobin production, oxygen transport, and energy metabolism throughout the body.
Learn moreTransferrin saturation measures the percentage of the iron-transport protein transferrin that is occupied by iron. It is a key indicator of your body's iron status and helps distinguish between different causes of iron-related disorders.
Learn moreFerritin is a protein that stores iron in your cells and releases it when your body needs it. Blood ferritin levels reflect your body's total iron stores and are the most sensitive indicator for iron deficiency.
Learn moreTransferrin is the main protein responsible for transporting iron in the blood. It carries iron from the gut and storage sites to cells that need it, including bone marrow for red blood cell production.
Learn moreIron (Serum)
MineralsSerum iron measures the amount of circulating iron in your blood. Iron is essential for haemoglobin production, oxygen transport, and energy metabolism throughout the body.
Iron is vital for producing red blood cells and carrying oxygen. Both low and high levels can affect your health. Serum iron is best interpreted alongside ferritin and TIBC for a complete picture. Consult your healthcare provider.
Transferrin Saturation
MineralsTransferrin saturation measures the percentage of the iron-transport protein transferrin that is occupied by iron. It is a key indicator of your body's iron status and helps distinguish between different causes of iron-related disorders.
Transferrin saturation is one of the most informative markers for assessing iron balance. It can help identify iron deficiency before anemia develops and is also valuable for detecting iron overload conditions such as hemochromatosis.
Ferritin
MineralsFerritin is a protein that stores iron in your cells and releases it when your body needs it. Blood ferritin levels reflect your body's total iron stores and are the most sensitive indicator for iron deficiency.
Iron is essential for oxygen transport, energy production, and immune function. Ferritin testing helps detect iron deficiency before anaemia develops, or iron overload which can damage organs. Consult your healthcare provider for personalised advice.
Transferrin
MineralsTransferrin is the main protein responsible for transporting iron in the blood. It carries iron from the gut and storage sites to cells that need it, including bone marrow for red blood cell production.
Transferrin levels help determine whether your body is getting enough iron and transporting it effectively. Abnormal levels may indicate iron deficiency, overload, liver disease, or chronic conditions. Consult your healthcare provider for interpretation.
