Ferritin

A ferritin test measures how much iron your body keeps in reserve. Ferritin is a protein that stores iron. A small amount of it circulates in your blood. That amount reflects your stores.

Do you often feel tired? Is your hair falling out more than usual? Symptoms such as fatigue can be linked to low iron stores. A ferritin test gives you a first indication.

You order the test online and choose a sample point near you. Your result is available online within a few working days. A BIG-registered doctor reviews every result. No referral from your GP is needed.

Why take a ferritin test?

Your ferritin level says something about the amount of iron your body holds in reserve. A low ferritin level is often one of the earliest signs of a deficiency. It can show up before other blood values change.

Iron is needed to make red blood cells. When stores run low, that production suffers over time. A ferritin test shows whether your reserve is still adequate. It is not a diagnosis, but a starting point for a conversation with your doctor.

Who is this test suitable for?

This test may be of interest to women who:

  • often feel tired or low on energy
  • notice more hair fall than usual
  • have heavy or long periods
  • eat a vegetarian or vegan diet
  • want to conceive or have recently given birth

Menstruating women lose blood every month. That makes them more prone to a deficiency. For them this test is suitable as a periodic check.

What is measured?

This test measures a single blood value:

  • Ferritin: the protein that stores iron and reflects your reserve. Read our explanation of ferritin for the full reference ranges.

The ferritin measurement is carried out in a certified laboratory. A serum iron reading alone does not show your reserve. This value does.

What can a ferritin test tell you?

A low value can point to an iron deficiency. That happens when your body takes in too little iron. It also occurs through blood loss, for example during a heavy period.

A high value sometimes fits with inflammation. Less often it points to too much iron. The best-known form of that is iron overload (haemochromatosis), an inherited condition.

What your value means depends on your symptoms and your situation. The doctor assesses that for you.

Reference ranges and units

Dutch laboratories report the value in micrograms per litre. That unit is written as µg/l. In women the expected range usually falls between 15 and 150 µg/l.

In men the range runs from 30 to 400 µg/l. Labs abroad often use ng/ml. The two units are equal to each other. One ng/ml is therefore one µg/l.

The range differs by laboratory and by age. Your result therefore always carries the reference range of the lab that analysed your blood.

How is the blood collected?

Blood is drawn at a certified sample point. There are 700+ locations across the Netherlands. You can usually pick one close to home.

After ordering you choose a sample point and a time that suits you. Trained staff draw the blood. The sample then goes to the laboratory.

When should you take a ferritin test?

You might consider this test when:

  • you feel persistently tired without a clear reason
  • you notice more hair fall or find it harder to concentrate
  • you have heavy periods and want to track your iron stores
  • you eat a plant-based diet and want to know where you stand

Ferritin is not linked to your cycle. You can have blood drawn on any day of the month. That makes planning a good deal easier.

After your result

Your result is available online within a few working days. You see your value, the reference range and a clear explanation.

If a result falls outside the range, the doctor explains what may be going on. Is a low ferritin level behind your symptoms? Discuss that with your GP. Always take treatment decisions together with a doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. You order a ferritin test online and have blood drawn at a sample point near you. No referral from your GP is needed. A BIG-registered doctor reviews your result.

Usually not. Do you take iron supplements? Ask your doctor whether to pause them shortly before the test.

Ferritin is not linked to your cycle. You can have your blood drawn on any day of the month.

A low value can point to an iron deficiency. The doctor assesses your result and discusses any next steps with you.

During pregnancy the value often falls, because your body uses more iron. Your midwife or doctor assesses which range fits you.

01 Ferritin Ferritin is a protein that stores iron, so your ferritin level shows how large your iron reserve is. Serum iron only measures how much iron is circulating in your blood at that moment; ferritin describes the reserve behind it. That reserve empties before your haemoglobin falls, so a low ferritin can already cause symptoms while your blood count still looks normal. Ferritin also rises with inflammation, infection and liver strain, which is why it can only be read properly alongside a CRP. Commonly used reference values are 30 to 400 µg/l for men and 15 to 150 µg/l for women, but your own laboratory report is what counts. ug/l 2 days
Your result arrives once the slowest test is finished: 2 days. This is indicative; turnaround varies per laboratory.

Preparation

  1. Been ill? Wait a little

    Required

Had a fever, an infection or a vaccination in the past 2 weeks? Wait with the draw until you are fully recovered. These values react to inflammation and would give a distorted picture.

  2. Preferably fasting

    Recommended

Coming fasting gives a slightly cleaner value, but it is not required. If it suits you, eat nothing from 22:00 the evening before and drink only water.

  • Water is always fine. Drink as usual beforehand, it makes the draw easier.
  • Take your usual medication, unless your own doctor told you otherwise.
