Compare with the other tests in Thyroid

Your thyroid is a small gland in your neck with a surprisingly large influence on how you feel: your energy, your weight, your mood and even your cycle. When something feels out of balance, an anti-TPO test together with your other thyroid markers can help you understand what might be going on.

Thyroid complaints are relatively common in women, and antibodies sometimes play a role. This extended thyroid panel measures your thyroid hormones alongside two types of antibodies, so you get a broader view of what your thyroid is doing.

Why this test?

When you deal with tiredness, weight changes, hair loss or an irregular cycle, the thyroid is often one of the first things to look at. An anti-TPO test can help here, because antibodies against your own thyroid tissue can say something about a possible autoimmune process.

Anti-TPO and anti-Tg are antibodies that your immune system sometimes makes against your own thyroid. Raised values may point to autoimmune involvement, such as in Hashimoto disease. Combined with TSH, free T4 and free T3, this offers a broader view than a single TSH measurement.

Who is this test for?

This test can be useful if you have complaints that could fit with an overactive or underactive thyroid. Think of persistent tiredness, palpitations, a restless feeling, feeling cold easily, or changes in your weight, mood or menstrual cycle.

It can also be valuable if thyroid problems run in your family, or if you are trying to conceive and want to know how your thyroid is doing. Autoimmune thyroid conditions are more common in women than in men.

What is tested?

This panel measures five markers in your blood:

What can this test tell you?

The combination of hormones and antibodies can give you a more nuanced picture than a single value. TSH, free T4 and free T3 show how active your thyroid is right now, while anti-TPO and anti-Tg can say something about a possible autoimmune process in the background.

Sometimes your thyroid hormones may still fall within the reference range while antibodies are already raised. That can be a signal you can look into further with your GP.

How is the sample collected?

This test requires a small blood draw at a certified lab. In the Netherlands you can choose from 650+ sample locations, so there is almost always one near you.

After ordering, you pick a location and a moment that suits you. The draw itself usually takes only a few minutes, and you do not need a referral from your GP.

When is this test useful?

An extended thyroid panel can be useful at different moments, for example:

  • when you recognise complaints that could fit a thyroid issue and want more clarity
  • when you had an abnormal TSH before and want to see the broader picture
  • when thyroid conditions run in your family and you are curious about your antibodies
  • when you are trying to conceive or are newly pregnant and want to know how your thyroid is doing

What do the results mean?

Your result shows each marker together with a reference range. For the hormones, a value above or below the range can say something about an overactive or underactive thyroid. For the antibodies, the result usually indicates whether they are raised or not.

Raised antibodies do not automatically mean you will develop complaints, and a normal result does not rule everything out. That is why a doctor looks at the whole picture and helps you place your values in the right context.

What happens after the results?

Your results are usually in your Lunarahealth account within 2 working days of the blood draw, often the next day. Some markers take longer. Each value is shown clearly with a reference range and an explanation, so you understand what you see.

Every blood test result includes a professional assessment from a BIG-registered doctor. For treatment decisions, discuss your results with your GP.

Frequently Asked Questions

An anti-TPO test measures antibodies against the enzyme thyroid peroxidase in your thyroid. Raised values may point to an autoimmune process, such as Hashimoto, but on their own they do not yet say anything about complaints.

Raised anti-TPO or anti-Tg can fit with Hashimoto, but a blood test does not make a diagnosis. Your GP looks at your values, your symptoms and your situation together.

For a thyroid test you usually do not need to fast. If you take biotin supplements, it can help to mention this, because it may affect the measurement.

No, you can order this panel online without a referral. You choose your own sample location and a moment that suits you.

You pay €175,-. The blood draw is already included, so nothing is added.

No, a test you request yourself is not part of the basic Dutch insurance. You pay it yourself, and your deductible (eigen risico) stays untouched.

Count on one business day, a day longer for an order after 17:00 or at the weekend: by then the referral email has arrived, and you cannot go before it does. Some draw sites then take walk-ins and the rest work by appointment. Each location says which.

Your barcode from the ZorgDomein email and a valid ID. Showing the barcode on your phone is fine. Without a BSN you get no barcode; print the referral form from the link in the email instead.

Yes, unless your own doctor said otherwise. Some markers ask for extra preparation, such as no alcohol for 24 hours or no heavy training for 48 hours. You see this on the test and in the instructions after you order.

You show your barcode and your ID at the draw site, and then your blood is taken. Allow about a quarter of an hour.

Yes, a BIG-registered doctor assesses every result and explains your values in your account. If you want treatment, discuss the result with your GP.

In one of the independent, certified laboratories across the Netherlands that Lunarahealth works with. They also run the draw sites, which Lunarahealth does not own. Reference values can differ a little between labs.

No, your test bypasses your GP and does not end up in your medical record. Data goes to a healthcare provider only with your written consent, and it is never sold. Anonymous is not possible: a valid result needs your name, date of birth and ID.

Preparation

  1. Pause biotin

    Required

Do you take a supplement with biotin (vitamin B8, common in hair, skin and nail supplements)? Stop it 72 hours before the draw. Biotin interferes with the measurement of these values.

  2. Timing worth knowing

    Good to know

If you repeat this test, pick the same time of day each time so the results compare.

  3. On levothyroxine? Worth knowing

    Good to know

Tell the staff at the draw when you took your tablet; for most values the timing makes no difference.

  • Water is always fine. Drink as usual beforehand, it makes the draw easier.
  • Take your usual medication, unless your own doctor told you otherwise.
