Haemoglobin levels: what do they tell you about your blood?

Hemoglobin is especially important for women, as menstrual blood loss can lead to lower levels over time. Understanding your hemoglobin helps you take proactive steps to maintain your energy, support your hormonal health, and feel empowered in managing your well-being.

What It Measures

This test measures the concentration of hemoglobin in your blood, expressed in grams per decilitre (g/dL). Hemoglobin is an iron-containing protein that enables red blood cells to carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues and return carbon dioxide to the lungs.

Why It Matters

Hemoglobin is central to oxygen delivery throughout the body. Low levels may indicate iron deficiency anemia, chronic disease, or blood loss, while elevated levels can be associated with dehydration, lung disease, or polycythemia. It is one of the most commonly tested blood markers.

When to Test

Hemoglobin is measured as part of a complete blood count (CBC) during routine screenings, when investigating fatigue or weakness, during pregnancy, or for monitoring conditions that affect red blood cell production.

Symptoms

Low Levels

Fatigue, weakness, pale skin, shortness of breath, dizziness, cold hands and feet, brittle nails, headaches.

High Levels

Headaches, dizziness, flushed skin, blurred vision, itching, fatigue, increased risk of blood clots.

Lifestyle Tips

Eat iron-rich foods such as lean red meat, spinach, and legumes. Pair iron sources with vitamin C to enhance absorption. Avoid excessive tea or coffee with meals as they can inhibit iron uptake. Stay hydrated and maintain regular exercise for healthy circulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between hemoglobin and hematocrit?
Hemoglobin measures the amount of oxygen-carrying protein in your blood, while hematocrit measures the percentage of blood volume occupied by red blood cells. Both are related markers often tested together as part of a complete blood count.
Can diet alone correct low hemoglobin?
Mild hemoglobin decreases related to dietary deficiency may improve with iron-rich foods and proper nutrition. However, the cause of low hemoglobin should always be evaluated by a healthcare professional, as supplementation or further investigation may be needed.
