FSH testing is one of the most requested hormone tests for women. FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) plays a key role in fertility and is an important marker for menopause.

What is FSH?

FSH is produced by the pituitary gland and stimulates egg cell growth in the ovaries. As ovarian reserve decreases, FSH levels rise because the pituitary must work harder.

When to test

Test FSH on days 2-5 of your cycle for the most reliable result. It is useful when suspecting menopause, planning pregnancy, investigating irregular cycles or diagnosing PCOS.

Normal FSH values

3-10 IU/L is normal. 10-15 IU/L is borderline. Above 15 IU/L indicates reduced ovarian function. Above 25 IU/L is consistent with perimenopause. Above 40 IU/L is consistent with menopause.

Frequently asked questions

Is FSH the same as AMH?

No, they are different hormones providing complementary information. FSH rises as ovarian reserve decreases; AMH drops. Together they give the best picture.

Can FSH be normal during menopause?

Yes, especially in early perimenopause, FSH can fluctuate between normal and elevated. A single normal result does not rule out menopause.
