FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone)

Compare with the other tests in Fertility

FSH stands for follicle-stimulating hormone, made by your pituitary gland. It stimulates the growth of follicles in your ovaries and plays a role in your cycle and your fertility.

This test measures your FSH in a blood sample taken at a certified sample point. You order online, need no referral and receive your results, usually within 2 working days of the blood draw, including a doctor's assessment.

Why this test?

An FSH test can help you understand what is happening hormonally in your body. As your ovarian reserve declines, FSH may rise, something often seen around the (peri)menopause.

The test gives you a snapshot of a single hormone. It is not a diagnosis, but a data point you can discuss with a doctor alongside your symptoms and other values.

For many women, a measurement like this feels like a first step towards understanding questions about their cycle, their energy or the menopause.

Who is this test for?

This test may suit women who:

  • want to know whether symptoms might fit the menopause
  • have an irregular cycle
  • want insight into their fertility or ovarian reserve
  • want to record a baseline of their hormones

As a perimenopause check, FSH is often looked at together with oestradiol so a doctor can place the values in context.

What is tested?

This test measures one biomarker in your blood:

  • FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone): a hormone from your pituitary gland that stimulates the growth of follicles in your ovaries.

Your FSH value is often reviewed together with oestradiol and, for fertility questions, with AMH. You can read more on the page about FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone).

What can this test tell you?

Your FSH value can say something about how your pituitary gland and your ovaries work together. A higher value may point to a declining ovarian reserve, which is common around the menopause.

Because FSH fluctuates during your cycle, a single measurement is always a snapshot. A doctor therefore considers the wider context: your value, your symptoms and often your oestradiol as well.

How is the sample collected?

For this test, blood is drawn at a certified sample point. There are 650+ locations across the Netherlands, which you choose yourself after ordering.

You do not need to see your GP first; you pick a location and a time that suit you. The draw is done by trained staff and usually takes only a few minutes.

When is this test useful?

For questions about your cycle or fertility, FSH is usually measured early in the cycle, often around day 2 to 5 (day 1 is the first day of your period).

Around the menopause, FSH can be measured at any time, and the result is interpreted together with your symptoms and your oestradiol. This can help when assessing whether you may be entering the menopause.

What do the results mean?

Your result shows your FSH alongside a reference range and a short explanation. What counts as a healthy value varies by lab, age and cycle day, so numbers alone say little.

Many women want to know whether their hormones fit the (peri)menopause. A raised FSH can be part of that pattern, but only a doctor can properly interpret your result.

What happens after the results?

Your results are usually in your Lunarahealth account within 2 working days of the blood draw, often the next day. Some markers take longer. You see your FSH value, its reference range and a clear explanation.

Every blood test result includes a professional assessment from a BIG-registered doctor. For treatment decisions, discuss your results with your GP.

Frequently Asked Questions

For cycle or fertility questions, FSH is often measured around day 2 to 5 of your cycle. Around the menopause it can be measured at any time, together with your symptoms and oestradiol.

For an FSH test you usually do not need to fast. If in doubt, check with your GP.

A raised FSH can fit a declining ovarian reserve, which is common around the menopause. Your doctor interprets the value together with your other information.

You pay €60,-. The blood draw is already included, so nothing is added.

No, you do not need your GP. We arrange the referral through ZorgDomein within one business day; an order after 17:00 or at the weekend counts from the next business day. The ZorgDomein email has a barcode for the draw site. At a few draw sites you choose a time on your order page, or we schedule it for you.

No, a test you request yourself is not part of the basic Dutch insurance. You pay it yourself, and your deductible (eigen risico) stays untouched.

Count on one business day, a day longer for an order after 17:00 or at the weekend: by then the referral email has arrived, and you cannot go before it does. Some draw sites then take walk-ins and the rest work by appointment. Each location says which.

Your barcode from the ZorgDomein email and a valid ID. Showing the barcode on your phone is fine. Without a BSN you get no barcode; print the referral form from the link in the email instead.

Yes, unless your own doctor said otherwise. Some markers ask for extra preparation, such as no alcohol for 24 hours or no heavy training for 48 hours. You see this on the test and in the instructions after you order.

You show your barcode and your ID at the draw site, and then your blood is taken. Allow about a quarter of an hour.

Yes, a BIG-registered doctor assesses every result and explains your values in your account. If you want treatment, discuss the result with your GP.

In one of the independent, certified laboratories across the Netherlands that Lunarahealth works with. They also run the draw sites, which Lunarahealth does not own. Reference values can differ a little between labs.

No, your test bypasses your GP and does not end up in your medical record. Data goes to a healthcare provider only with your written consent, and it is never sold. Anonymous is not possible: a valid result needs your name, date of birth and ID.
