What is HCG?

Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone produced during pregnancy. It's made by cells that form the placenta, which nourishes the egg after fertilization and attachment to the uterine wall. HCG levels can first be detected in a blood test about 11 days after conception and around 12-14 days by a urine test.

Why HCG Levels Matter

HCG levels during early pregnancy can provide important information about the health of your pregnancy. The hormone doubles approximately every 48-72 hours in early pregnancy, reaching its peak around 8-11 weeks. After that, levels decline and plateau for the remainder of the pregnancy.

HCG Doubling Time

In a healthy pregnancy, HCG typically doubles every 48-72 hours during the first few weeks. The doubling time slows as levels increase. A single HCG measurement is less informative than observing the trend over multiple measurements taken 48-72 hours apart.

Your healthcare provider may order serial HCG tests to monitor the progression of your pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my HCG is lower than expected?

Lower-than-expected HCG levels could indicate several things: miscalculated conception date, ectopic pregnancy, or miscarriage. However, a single low value isn't definitive. Your healthcare provider will likely recommend follow-up tests to track the trend.

What if my HCG is higher than expected?

Higher levels may indicate a multiple pregnancy (twins or more), a molar pregnancy, or simply a miscalculated conception date. Your healthcare provider can perform an ultrasound to provide more information.

How often should I check my HCG?

HCG tests are typically ordered by your healthcare provider as needed. For monitoring early pregnancy, tests may be done 48-72 hours apart to track the doubling time. Self-monitoring is not recommended as it can cause unnecessary anxiety.

When does HCG peak during pregnancy?

HCG levels typically peak between 8-11 weeks of pregnancy, reaching levels of 50,000-200,000 mIU/mL or higher. After this peak, levels gradually decline and stabilize for the rest of the pregnancy.

Can HCG levels predict twins?

While higher HCG levels can sometimes indicate a multiple pregnancy, this is not a reliable predictor. Many singleton pregnancies have high HCG levels, and some twin pregnancies have levels in the normal range. An ultrasound is the only definitive way to confirm multiples.
