You can test your thyroid in three ways: a symptom self-test (a questionnaire), a home test with a finger prick, or a blood test at a draw location. The difference lies in what they measure. Only a blood measurement of TSH and free T4 gives a reliable picture of how your thyroid works; a questionnaire does not.
Which one suits you depends on what you want to know. Below I put the options side by side, with their strong and weak points.
What is a thyroid self-test?
A self-test is usually a questionnaire about your complaints: fatigue, weight, temperature, mood. It gives an indication of whether your complaints could fit a thyroid problem, but it measures nothing in your blood. So a self-test can put you on a track, but it never confirms a diagnosis.
Useful as a first step, as long as you realise the outcome does not replace a value. For a real measurement you need blood.
Home test with a finger prick
A home test usually measures TSH from a few drops of blood via a finger prick. That is a step more concrete than a questionnaire. The accuracy depends on the prick, the transport and the lab, and most home tests measure only TSH, not free T4 or anti-TPO.
So you miss nuance: a normal TSH with complaints may still call for free T4. For a fuller picture a venous blood draw (from the arm) is usually more reliable.
Blood test at a draw location
With a blood test, blood is taken from your arm at a draw location and analysed in a laboratory. This lets you measure several values at once, TSH, free T4, free T3 and anti-TPO, and read them in context. That is the most complete and reliable option.
At Lunara you do this without a referral. The Thyroid Complete measures the four core values in one draw, and a BIG-registered doctor provides context per value. What those values mean, you can read in thyroid values explained.
Self-test, home test and blood test compared
The table puts the three side by side. Use it to choose what fits your question.
| Method | What it measures | Reliability | Suitable for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Symptom self-test | Complaints only (questionnaire) | Indicative | A first orientation |
| Home test (finger prick) | Usually TSH only | Reasonable, depends on draw | A quick TSH check at home |
| Blood test (draw location) | TSH, free T4, free T3, anti-TPO | High | A full, readable picture |
No test replaces the conversation with your doctor. Always discuss an abnormal result with your GP.
Which thyroid test can you buy without a GP?
You can order a thyroid blood test at Lunara yourself, without a referral. You book a slot at one of the 750+ draw locations in the Netherlands, have blood taken in the morning and receive your result digitally, usually within a few working days.

Frequently asked questions
Is a thyroid home test reliable?
A home test that measures TSH can give a useful indication, but it often misses free T4 and anti-TPO. With complaints or a borderline value, a blood test with several values is more reliable. Discuss an abnormal result with your doctor.
Do I need a referral to test my thyroid?
No. At Lunara you order a thyroid test without a GP referral. You then discuss any abnormal result with your GP.
Do I need to fast for a thyroid test?
For TSH and free T4 you usually do not need to fast. It is wise to test at roughly the same morning time each time, so measurements are comparable.
