Your oestradiol level is one of the most important hormone values for women. Oestradiol (E2) is the most active form of oestrogen, playing a central role in your cycle, fertility and overall health.

Normal oestradiol levels by cycle phase

Values in pmol/L: follicular phase (day 1-13): 45-850, ovulation (around day 14): 150-1500, luteal phase (day 15-28): 80-800, menstruation: 45-150. Always compare with the specific reference range on your results.

Oestradiol levels by age

During reproductive years (18-40), values follow the cycle pattern. In perimenopause (40-55), fluctuations increase and average values decline. Post-menopause, oestradiol typically drops below 100 pmol/L.

When is your level too low or too high?

Low oestradiol may indicate menopause, premature ovarian insufficiency or excessive exercise. High oestradiol may occur with overweight or certain medications. Symptoms of low oestradiol include hot flushes, vaginal dryness and fatigue.

Frequently asked questions

When in my cycle should I test?

Days 2-5 provide the most representative baseline value.

Can contraception affect my oestradiol level?

Yes, hormonal contraception suppresses your natural oestradiol production, so the measured value is not representative of your natural balance.
