White discharge: pregnant or period? What your body does and does not reveal

White discharge: pregnant or period? You cannot tell from the discharge itself. After ovulation, progesterone makes your discharge thicker and whiter. That happens in a cycle without pregnancy exactly as in a very early pregnancy.

The only difference is in what follows. Just before a period your progesterone drops and the discharge lessens, until bleeding begins. In pregnancy progesterone stays high and the discharge stays. Usually a little more than you are used to.

I understand very well why you look at it. In the week before your period, your body is all you have. It just does not tell you anything at this point in your cycle, whatever you read.

Can I tell from my discharge whether I am pregnant?

No, you cannot tell from your discharge whether you are pregnant. Both the discharge before your period and that in a very early pregnancy are driven by progesterone. That hormone is high in both cases. So what you see is the same.

The mechanism has been studied well, especially around ovulation. Bigelow and colleagues had women assess their mucus daily (PMID 14990542). Clear, stretchy mucus predicted the fertile days better than the timing of intercourse did. That stretchy mucus belongs to oestrogen, which peaks just before ovulation.

After ovulation, progesterone takes over. The mucus becomes thicker, whiter and stickier, and stays that way until your progesterone drops. If it does not drop, because you are pregnant, the discharge stays as it is.

That is the whole reason it does not work. You are looking at the work of one hormone. That hormone does the same thing in both situations.

What kind of discharge belongs to a very early pregnancy?

A very early pregnancy comes with white to pale-yellow, creamy discharge without a strong smell. Often a little more than you are used to. Itching, a strong smell, a green or grey colour or pain when urinating do not belong. Those take you to your GP, pregnant or not.

More discharge happens because your cervix produces more mucus under oestrogen and progesterone. It is one of the first changes some women notice. Others notice nothing at all, and that says just as little.

A few drops of blood in it do occur. Harville followed 221 women trying to conceive (PMID 12923154). About 9 percent of the pregnant women had some bleeding somewhere in the first eight weeks. What that does and does not mean is in our article on implantation bleeding or period.

How many days before your period do you get white discharge?

White, thicker discharge usually begins straight after ovulation. It lasts about 10 to 14 days, until just before your period. That is the whole second half of your cycle. In the last day or two it often lessens or dries up, because progesterone falls then.

Precisely those last days are the only moment your discharge says anything, and then only in hindsight. Does the thick white discharge continue while your period does not arrive? That is a hint that your progesterone has not dropped. That is still not proof, but it is a reason to test.

The table is, frankly, a long way of saying you can look right past it. Only the bottom row counts.

How do you know whether you are pregnant or about to get your period?

You only know once your period is late and a test shows hCG. Everything before that, discharge, tender breasts, bloating, comes from progesterone and belongs to both situations. A test is the only step that makes the difference.

Say you are on day 26 of a 28-day cycle. You have had thick white discharge for a week. Your ovulation fell around day 14, so you are on day 12 after ovulation.

If you are pregnant, implantation has probably just happened. Your hCG is only just starting to rise.

So a urine test on day 26 is often still negative, pregnant or not. Cole and colleagues calculated how much a test must detect (PMID 14749643). To find 95 percent on the day of the missed period, that is 12.5 mIU/ml. Two days earlier, hCG is lower still.

Do you not want to wait? A blood test measures hCG as a number, even while it is still low. That is possible with an hCG blood test without a referral.

For most women, waiting two days and then testing with morning urine is just as good. And much cheaper.

When do you see your GP about discharge?

See your GP for discharge that itches, smells strongly, or is green or grey. Also if it is frothy or comes with pain when urinating. Thuisarts lists those signs for a yeast infection, bacterial vaginosis or an STI. That applies at every stage of your cycle and also when you are pregnant.

So my advice is simple: look at smell, colour and itching, not at quantity. The quantity tells you nothing about pregnancy. The smell and the colour do tell you whether something else is going on.
