Urine Bilirubin

Bilirubin is a bile pigment that forms when red blood cells are broken down: first haemoglobin is released, which is then broken down into bilirubin. The liver converts bilirubin into conjugated bilirubin, which leaves the body through the bowel and the stool.

Only that converted bilirubin dissolves in water and can end up in the urine, and urine normally contains no detectable amount of bilirubin. According to an American review from 2022, a positive dipstick is a reason to investigate the liver and bile ducts, and whether there is bilirubin in the urine only a urine test shows.

Urine bilirubin has no unit: the result is negative or positive. Star-SHL expects 'Negatief' (negative) on its urine strip, Unilabs 'n.aant.' (not detectable) on a urine bilirubin test that can no longer be ordered.
