A CRP below 5 mg/l counts as normal in most Dutch labs. Higher than that, and inflammation or infection is active somewhere in your body. Your blood just will not say where, and that is where nearly all the confusion starts.
What strikes me about women in particular: the conversation is always about the number, rarely about the context around it. Are you on the pill? Then your CRP sits higher on average, even when nothing is wrong. I almost never see that mentioned, and it colours your result completely.

What is CRP and what does your CRP value say?
CRP stands for C-reactive protein, made by your liver as soon as inflammation appears. It is an alarm bell, not an address. A raised CRP shows your immune system is working, but not what against. The value moves fast: it climbs within six to eight hours of a trigger and falls just as quickly once the inflammation settles (PMID 12813013).
That speed is what makes CRP useful in the consulting room. Your GP can use it to weigh whether symptoms fit a bacterial infection. Thuisarts and the NHG describe CRP as an aid in judging severity, never as a diagnosis on its own.
There is also a more sensitive version, hsCRP. It measures the same protein across a much lower range, which brings quiet, low-grade inflammation into view rather than an acute infection.
What is ESR and how does it differ from CRP?
ESR is the erythrocyte sedimentation rate: how far your red blood cells sink in a tube over one hour. Inflammation changes certain proteins in your blood, so the cells clump and sink faster. It is an indirect measure, and a slow one.
That difference in tempo is the whole point. CRP peaks within a day and falls within days. ESR climbs slowly and stays up for weeks, long after you feel better. Two values, two timelines.

What are normal inflammation markers?
For CRP, most Dutch labs use an upper limit around 5 mg/l, sometimes 10. For ESR there is no single number that fits everyone, because the normal value rises with age and runs higher in women than in men. An ESR of 20 mm/hour is notable in a woman of 30 and often unremarkable in a woman of 70.
An old and still-used rule of thumb calculates the upper limit for women as age plus ten, divided by two (PMID 6402065). For a woman of 50 that lands around 30 mm/hour.

Reference ranges differ per laboratory. Always read the range printed on your own result, not a number from an article.
How do you read CRP and ESR together?
On their own these two values say little. Side by side they say something about time: has this just started, or has it been dragging on? That combination is why a doctor often orders both, and it is exactly the piece most explanations leave out.

Imagine two women of 34, both with a CRP of 4 mg/l, comfortably inside the range. One has an ESR of 8 mm/hour, the other 42. Same CRP, a very different story, and only the second result calls for a follow-up conversation.
That is also the limit of this test. A normal CRP does not rule out chronic inflammation. In slow, low-grade processes CRP often just sits quietly under five.
Why is your CRP higher on the pill?
Oestrogen from the contraceptive pill prompts your liver to make more CRP. That is not inflammation, it is a liver response to a hormone. In a study of healthy young women, CRP in pill users averaged twice that of non-users: 2.0 versus 0.9 mg/l. Pill use explained roughly a third of the variation in CRP between women in that analysis (PMID 12850240).
This has one practical consequence I think matters. hsCRP is used to say something about cardiovascular risk. In Ridker's large study of 28,263 postmenopausal women, hsCRP was the strongest single predictor of cardiovascular events, with more than four times the risk in the highest group compared with the lowest (PMID 10733371).
But if your hsCRP is up because of your pill, you are measuring your pill, not your arteries. So always mention your contraception alongside your result. More on what hormonal contraception does to your blood values sits in the article on birth control and your hormones.
Which inflammatory conditions show up more in women?
Inflammation is not a women's problem, but autoimmune disease largely is. Autoimmune conditions affect around eight percent of the population, and 78 percent of those patients are women (PMID 18688037). That skew is why a persistently raised sedimentation rate in a woman points somewhere slightly different.

Your thyroid belongs on this list too. The most common thyroid condition in the Netherlands is autoimmune in nature, which shows up in the antibodies. That is explained under thyroid values TSH, free T4 and anti-TPO.
What does an inflammation marker of 100 mean?
A CRP around 100 mg/l is substantial. Such a value usually fits a serious bacterial infection, for example pneumonia or a kidney infection. With an ordinary viral infection, CRP tends to stay under 40. The number alone makes no diagnosis, but above 100 a doctor should always take a look.
What the height tells you is mostly about likelihood. The higher the value, the smaller the chance this is something harmless. But the exceptions are real: a heavy flu can spike temporarily, and someone with smouldering inflammation may sit quietly under ten.
So a doctor never looks at CRP alone. Do you have a fever? For how long? What do your white blood cells say? Those questions decide what a 100 means, not the number itself.
What is the difference between CRP and hsCRP?
They measure the same protein, but across a different range. Ordinary CRP is built to spot infections and only really starts speaking above 5 mg/l. hsCRP measures far more precisely in the low range, between 0 and 3, which brings smouldering inflammation into view that the ordinary test cannot see.
That difference decides what you use them for. If you have a fever and abdominal pain, you want ordinary CRP. If you want to know about the quiet, low-grade inflammation linked to cardiovascular risk, hsCRP is the test for the job.
One hard condition comes with hsCRP. If you have an infection when blood is drawn, even a harmless cold, your ordinary CRP shoots up and drowns out the fine signal completely. You are measuring your cold, not your arteries. So wait until you have been symptom-free for at least two weeks.
Can you lower your own inflammation markers?
Partly, but not the way the internet promises. Low-grade inflammation is tied to lifestyle, and some of that is in your hands. What is not in your hands is an autoimmune disease or an infection, and no diet will wipe those away.
The factors most clearly linked in research to a higher hsCRP are excess weight, smoking and inactivity. Fat tissue is not passive storage, it makes signalling molecules that prompt your liver to produce more CRP. That is why weight loss often brings the inflammation marker down as well.
What I would be careful with: supplements that promise to "reset" your inflammation. For most of them the evidence is thin, and a normal CRP is not a goal in itself. The number is a thermometer, not a dial.

When do you take a high inflammation marker to your GP?
A one-off mildly raised value with no symptoms is usually not an alarm. A cold, an inflamed tooth or a heavy training week can lift your CRP temporarily. The question is not how high the number is, but whether it matches how you feel and whether it stays up.
My rule of thumb: one abnormal value is a question, not an answer. Repeat it a few weeks later and see whether it holds. Only a value that refuses to explain itself away really deserves investigation.
Discuss your result with your GP if symptoms persist, if a raised value does not settle on a repeat test, or if fever, weight loss or joint complaints come with it. Your GP can decide whether further investigation makes sense.
What can you test yourself?
To bring your own inflammation markers into view, you can pick CRP and ESR individually through building your own blood test. For a more sensitive look at low-grade inflammation there is also hsCRP.
Two things make your result more useful. Do not draw blood during or right after an infection, because then you are measuring that infection. And note whether you use hormonal contraception, so you read your CRP in the right context.
