Fatigue after birth: postpartum tiredness or something else?

Being tired after birth is part of it. Broken nights, recovery and a big hormone shift all take energy, so fatigue is very normal in the first months. Still, not every exhaustion is only sleep loss: sometimes anaemia, a slow thyroid or a vitamin B12 shortage plays a part.

The tricky part is that those complaints look just like ordinary postpartum tiredness. A blood value helps to make the distinction. Below you will read when tiredness deserves more attention and what you can test.

Why are you so tired after birth?

Fatigue after birth comes from a stack of factors: sleep loss, physical recovery, breastfeeding and the sharp drop of your pregnancy hormones. Your body is working on several things at once, and that takes energy. In the first weeks deep tiredness is therefore the rule rather than the exception.

This postpartum tiredness slowly fades in most women as the nights get calmer. It is unpleasant, but not in itself a sign that something is wrong.

If the tiredness stays unabated, even when you do sleep a bit more, that is a reason to look further.

When is it more than postpartum tiredness?

Fatigue deserves extra attention if it persists, worsens or comes with other symptoms. A low iron, a thyroid that is off balance or a vitamin B12 shortage can cause or amplify tiredness. The table below helps you organise.

This table is a tool, not a diagnosis. If you recognise yourself in the upper rows, a targeted blood value can help you further, together with your GP. Ongoing low mood always belongs with your GP, whatever the result.

Which blood values can you test with fatigue?

With ongoing fatigue, your iron, your thyroid and vitamin B12 are often looked at. These values can show whether something is playing a part behind the tiredness. You can have them drawn at Lunara without a referral.

The Tiredness test bundles a number of these values at once. If you want to look at your iron or thyroid specifically, you can do that separately too, via anaemia after birth or thyroid after birth.

Which values are useful for you depends on your other symptoms. For the broader picture of tiredness and blood values there is our article always tired: which blood values. This piece belongs to our overview of recovery after birth.

What can you do yourself about fatigue after birth?

Rest where you can, even if that is a small miracle with a newborn. The Voedingscentrum advises a varied diet with enough iron and protein, which can support your recovery. Also ask for help from people around you, so you can really catch up on sleep now and then.

Food and rest do not always fix a real shortage. If you stay exhausted, a blood value can show whether more is going on than sleep loss.

Do not take supplements on your own initiative. What fits you, you decide with your GP.

Frequently asked questions

How long does postpartum tiredness last?

That varies per person and is mostly linked to your night rest. In many women the worst tiredness fades in the first months, as the baby sleeps better. If the exhaustion persists, a blood value is worth considering.

Does breastfeeding make you extra tired?

Breastfeeding takes energy and fluid, so it can amplify the tiredness, certainly combined with short nights. That does not mean something is wrong. Eat and drink enough and discuss ongoing exhaustion with your GP.

When should I see the GP about fatigue?

Get in touch if the tiredness persists despite rest, worsens quickly or comes with symptoms like paleness, feeling cold or low mood. You do not have to wait for the check-up.

If I could give you one thing to take away: be gentle with yourself, because tiredness after a birth is usually not a sign that something is wrong. But do not keep walking around with it endlessly either. If the exhaustion persists, have your iron, thyroid and B12 look along and discuss it with your GP.
