Implantation bleeding colour: pink, brown or bright red

The colour of implantation bleeding is usually pink or brown, sometimes bright red. That colour tells you only how long the blood was in transit. It does not tell you where it came from.

The distinction sounds small. In practice it saves a lot of unnecessary worry.

What colour actually measures

Blood changes colour when it meets oxygen. That process is oxidation.

If blood comes out quickly, it is red or pink. If it sits for a day, it turns brown.

Colour is a clock, not a diagnosis. It measures time, not cause.

Bright red is not automatically alarming

This is the question that comes up most often in searches. Bright red blood feels more worrying than brown.

The amount matters more than the colour. In Hasan's study of 4,539 women, only 8 percent of those with bleeding described it as heavy.

That same study gave a reassuring figure. Among women with bleeding, 12 percent had a miscarriage, against 13 percent of women without bleeding.

What to look at instead of colour

Three things tell you more. All three are easy to observe.

• The amount. A few smears is not the same as a full pad.
• The course. Is it increasing or decreasing?
• The timing. How many days sit between your ovulation and the bleeding?

That last one is the most usable. Wilcox and colleagues found implantation falls on day 8, 9 or 10 after ovulation in 84 percent of women.

Pink or brown discharge: blood or mucus?

Many women see not blood but discoloured discharge. That is a different thing, and the distinction is worth making.

Discharge is mucus from your cervix. Add a small amount of blood and that mucus turns pink or brown.

That dilution explains why the shade can be so light. Very little blood is involved.

This also happens without pregnancy. Around ovulation your mucus changes in texture, and sometimes a little blood comes with it.

Seeing only discoloured mucus and nothing else? That is rarely a cause for concern. If it turns into real bleeding, the signals further down apply.

The amount therefore matters more than the shade. That holds for mucus just as much as for blood.

Why forum photos do not help

Forums carry many descriptions and images. They vary enormously, and there is a reason for that.

Harville and colleagues found no support for the hypothesis that implantation causes bleeding. What women call implantation bleeding afterwards is therefore a collection of different things.

When to call

Thuisarts.nl advises calling the same day for heavy bleeding, for severe abdominal pain lasting more than two hours, or for a fever from 38 degrees. For dizziness or black spots in your vision together with heavy bleeding, call immediately.

Colour is not on that list. That is not an accident.

Can implantation bleeding look like a period?
In colour, certainly. In amount and course usually not, because a period gets heavier and light bleeding does not.

Is bright red blood a bad sign?
Not on its own. Bright red only means the blood is fresh, and the amount says far more than the shade.

Can the colour change during the same episode?
Yes. Blood that lingers oxidises, so the same bleed can start red and end brown.

How do I know if I have implantation bleeding?
Not from the colour. Only a test can establish pregnancy, and only then is there anything to say.
